Undergraduate Studies The first year of study focuses on the development of the basic skills required in mathematics, basic sciences, drawing and mechanics. During the second year, the student is exposed to more of the civil and environmental engineering courses such as structures, urban engineering, environmental engineering and earth materials as well as strengthening the foundation in mathematics. Third and fourth-year curricula expose the student to subjects such as construction materials, structural engineering and operations research in addition to hydraulics and geotechnical engineering.

The last six weeks of the fourth year are devoted to a design project where the students draw together all the knowledge and skill they have developed during their degree.The degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Wits University is accepted by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as fulfilling all the academic requirements for registration as a Professional Engineer.Acting in terms of the Engineering Profession of South Africa Act 1990, ECSA has stipulated a minimum period of three years approved practical training and experience under the guidance of a professional engineer before a candidate may register as a Professional Engineer. This period may be reduced by up to one year in recognition of successful postgraduate degree work. It is of the utmost importance that every graduate should register as an engineer in training immediately after graduation.In terms of the Washington Accord signed in June 2000 of which South Africa is a signatory, official recognition of our qualifications has been approved by professional engineering accrediting bodies in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and Hong Kong.

Admission Requirements

The minimum Matric requirements (National Senior Certificate) for admission to the Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate program is 36 points. For non-NSC matriculants – a minimum of 60% at the Higher Grade obtained for Mathematics, Physical Science and English.Compliance with the minimum requirements does not guarantee automatic admission.A candidate who has successfully completed courses in Chemistry and Physics at the university or other institution recognized by the Senate for this purpose may be deemed by the Senate to have obtained a pass in Physical Science at a Higher Grade.
