What is Otorhinolaryngology?
Otorhinolaryngology (ENT Surgery) refers to a very wide field, including
- medical and surgical conditions of the ear, nose and throat
- neurotology
- skull-base surgery,
- head and neck surgery
- audiology and speech pathology
Neurotology is an area of special interest of the department, especially the early diagnosis of acoustic neuromas, middle fossa surgery and the diagnosis and management of vertigo. The department possesses a video nystagmography machine to aid in the diagnosis of patients with vertigo. Other areas of interest include laser surgery and the prevention and management of tracheal stenosis.
Community Clinics
- Universitas Hospital – the department renders a general ENT clinic four days a week. In addition, a specialist vertigo clinic is held once a week
- National Hospital – a combined clinic is held twice a week and a combined cleft palate clinic is held with the Departments of Plastic Surgery and Medical Genetics once a month
- Universitas Hospital – a comprehensive range of audiological tests are performed, including pure tone and speech audiometry, behavioural audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and auditory steady-state response
Training
The department is involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of otorhinolaryngology.
