University of Johannesburg School of Mining Metallurgy – See Details Below:

Chemical Engineering Technology

Chemical Engineering Technology focuses on the handling, analysis, monitoring, properties and processing of a wide variety of materials such as chemicals, compounds, pastes, petroleum derivatives, mining ores, pharmaceuticals, gas products and more. Chemical reactions and properties are examined on a small scale and then applied to real-world industrial settings. Chemical Engineering involves chemical exchanges between substances when raw materials are turned into products. It also investigates the nature of chemical reactions and involves process and equipment optimization commissioning and design, trouble shooting and problem solving.

Responsibilities

Core functions of a Chemical Engineer or Technician involve raw material and final product analysis, quality assurance, research and development, technical sales and services, production and process control.

Career Opportunities

Chemical Engineering Technologists and Technicians are focused on chemical processes used in industry. Employment opportunities exist across a wide range of manufacturing environments such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, iron and steel, food and beverages, water and waste water. Chemical processes are also required to prevent harmful pollutants escaping into soil, water and air, therefore additional career avenues exist within the field of environmental management.

Mining Engineering

University of Johannesburg provides formal tuition towards a formal degree in Mining Engineering technology programmes. The programmes are carefully designed, uniquely career focused and aligned with mining industry and mining organization across South Africa.

Responsibilities
Mine management is focused on the extraction of minerals from an ore-body safely and economically while meeting mine financial targets. In addition to specialist mining knowledge and engineering expertise, a mining engineer requires good interpersonal skills and strong business acumen.

Career Opportunities
Mining Engineering is a combination of several areas of expertise. It involves organizing, operating and monitoring mining processes in conjunction with environmental protection and health and safety requirements for underground working conditions. Through technological advancements, the industry has improved production levels and safety whilst simultaneously managing environmental impact. Strategic industry relations provides a platform for graduate

Programme: Mine Surveying
Mine Surveyors provide information to all mining disciplines and surveying therefore forms a central function on a mine. University of Johannesburg is the only institution in South Africa that offers a full-time contact programme in Surveying, equipping graduates with the necessary competence required for mining operations. In addition, strong links are maintained with the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs, mining industry and the Institute of Mine Surveyors.

Responsibilities
Tasks involve the accurate measurement of areas and volumes mined and the precise representation of surface and undergrounds mining on mining plans. Mine Surveyors advise mining engineers about geological areas that can be profitably mined.

Career Opportunities
Mine Surveyors are employed within the field of mining science and technology, with a key focus on measurements, calculations and mapping for all stages of the mining process.

 Engineering Metallurgy

The Department of Metallurgy maintains strong links with the metal industry within South Africa, providing undergraduates with exposure to a wide range of metal-related operations. The exposure equips graduates with sound knowledge of metal production, design and manufacture.

Responsibilities
Metallurgical Engineers are skilled in the production of metals and metallic materials. They also play a vital role in assessing the suitability of metals for use in metallic goods, development of ways to process metals and convert them into useful goods.

Extraction Metallurgists specialize in the extraction of metals and minerals from run of mine ores. They control, design process improvements to optimize the recovery of metals and minerals from ore. Often these processes require further refinement to purify metals extracted.

Extraction Metallurgists are also focused on recovery efficiency and cost control. Sampling at various stages in the process is an important aspect of plant control to ensure target recoveries are achieved. Sampling analysis requires metallurgists to be familiar with chemical analysis and other sophisticated analytical techniques.
