Does University of Kwazulu Natal UKZN Offer Pharmacy – Details:

Pharmacy is dynamic, information driven, product-and patient-orientated profession. In accordance with the requirements laid down by the South African Pharmacy Council, the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree is designed to produce healthcare professionals who are committed to meeting the pharmaceutical needs of all health seeking communities.

Pharmacists are responsible for distributing prescription drugs to patients and teaching them how to use their medication properly. They keep a careful watch on patients to make sure they are using their prescriptions properly.

They also advise doctors on the side effects, dosages, selection, and interactions of certain medication. Pharmacists have a good understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of each drug as well as the clinical effects and proper uses.

About Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences’ core function is the training of pharmacists to competently practice in all spheres of Pharmacy, i.e., community/retail, hospital, industry, Pharmacy education and training/ academia and pharmaceutical research and development.
Pharmacy is a dynamic profession where the pharmacist, through inculcated competence and skills during the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and the Pharmacy internship, is committed to meeting the health care needs of all health seeking communities by being the:

custodian of medicines;
formulator, manufacturer, distributor and controller of safe, effective and quality medicine;
advisor on the safe, rational and appropriate use of medicine;
provider of essential clinical services including screening and referral services;
provider of health care education and information;
provider of pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for the outcome of therapy and by being actively involved in the design, implementation and monitoring of pharmaceutical plans;
provider of cost-effective and efficient pharmaceutical services. (South African Pharmacy Council)

Bachelor of Pharmacy

CHS – PHRM 1 Selection for the Bachelor of Pharmacy

Candidates are eligible to apply for selections to register for the qualification of Bachelor of Pharmacy provided they have

  1. a) an NSC degree pass with English and Life Orientation and Mathematics and Life Sciences and Physical Science all at Level 4

(b)            33 points excluding Life Orientation

CHS – PHRM 2 Curriculum for the Bachelor of Pharmacy

The curriculum for the qualification Bachelor of Pharmacy, comprising modules with a total credit point value of 512 credits as approved by the Senate, shall extend over eight semesters of full-time study. All modules in the curriculum shall be compulsory.

CHS – PHRM 3 Progression requirements

To maintain their good standing, and to avoid either warning for slow academic progress or exclusion from the University, students must maintain minimum rates of progression through their qualifications. Minimum rates of acceptable progression for this qualification are set out below.

 

CHS – PHRM 4 Attendance

Attendance to all practical and clinical modules are compulsory.

CHS – PHRM 5 Statutory Body Requirements

A student is required to have completed 400 hours of experiential training before being awarded the degree.

Candidates are eligible to apply for selection to register for the qualification Master of Pharmacy (Pharmacy Practice / Pharmacoeconomics) provided they have:

  1. a) i) Bachelor of Pharmacy qualification, or
  2. ii) MBChB qualification, and
  3. b) at least two (2) years of experience in the pharmaceutical services (industry, community or hospital) for the Pharmacy Practice stream, or
  4. c) at least two (2) years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, managed health care or health facility management for the Pharmacoeconomics stream

CHS – PHRMM 2 Curriculum for the Master of Pharmacy (Pharmacy Practice/Pharmaco-economics) by course-work

The curriculum for the qualification Master of Pharmacy (Pharmacy Practice/Pharmaco-economics), comprising modules with a total credit value of 192 credits as approved by the Senate shall extend over four semesters of full-time study and research, or eight semesters part-time.
